You (2018)

What do you get when you cross Dexter with Gossip Girl? You is the answer, of course, and that's not just because of the Penn Badgley links. No, You is, at its core, a wildly addictive soap opera, but it just also happens to contain lots of death, sadism, and shocking twists and turns that'll leave you hooked every single season. It's the show that keeps on giving which, after five seasons, still somehow manages to surprise and entertain viewers like it was brand new. Badgley is incredible in the lead role, but his ing ladies, most notably Victoria Pedretti, who really steal the show.

You is trash. Not you, specifically, but Netflix's long-running TV show. Yet it's the kind of trash that has a way of getting under your skin, digging deeper with each twist or reveal that's more absurd than the last. No one else is making TV quite this twisty. And just when the writers veer dangerously close to romanticising Penn Badgley's protagonist, You pulls the rug out from under you to remind us that Joe is indeed a monster, after all. A very attractive monster, yes, with charming eyes and perfect hair and… ahem, yes. Watch You! It's a show and it's good. On Netflix now!

The idea of the "guilty pleasure" is usually bunk: if you like a show, don't ever feel guilty about it. Unless it's You, in which case that's kinda the whole point. Glossily presented, always ridiculous and, for the first couple of seasons, much sharper and satirical than it seems,You pulls off the evil trick of making you cheer for an anti-hero who is completely awful, beyond being a serial killer. He's objectively a cheesy cringe merchant as well. You hate yourself for staying with You through the loopy later years. You love to hate You, you hate to love You. Guilty as charged.
