Love, Death & Robots (2019)

Anthology shows like Love, Death & Robots live or die on the strength of their hit rate. Thankfully, there's way more stories about death and robots to love than hate in this collection of sci-fi led shorts that showcase the breadth of what animation has to offer. What's often overlooked, however, is the black, tongue-in-cheek humour threaded throughout. Who can forget the yoghurt that fought for world domination? The only problem is that each season is over far too quickly, although it's definitely for the best that Love, Death & Robots focuses on quality over speed and quantity.

It's easy to make the comparison between Love, Death & Robots and Black Mirror, for both shows depict a world we are terrifying close to making a reality. The difference with this animated anthology is that the already very ambitious ideas in Black Mirror are given even more freedom to run riot thanks to the medium used in Love, Death & Robots. Nothing is impossible when you're working with animation, clearly. There's such a broad range of tones on show here that you can easily slip between melancholy, intrigue, and even a daring splash of joy from episode to episode. Perfect bitesize viewing!
