Shirley (2024)

Viewers who enjoyed biopics like Harriet and Till, which highlight women in history, will love Shirley. The new biopic drama tells the story of Shirley Chisholm, the first African American woman to run for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination. Regina King is mesmerizing as she fully embodies Chisholm's intelligence, wit, power, and boldness. Viewers will find it difficult not to be inspired by the story of a woman who relentlessly followed her dreams. Shirley only captures a small part of this larger-than-life figure, but it's an excellent starting point for learning about and celebrating the legacy of Chisholm.

Shirley follows the presidential run of Shirley Chisholm, who had already become the first Black woman elected to the US Congress. In the film, Oscar and Emmy-winner Regina King plays Shirley, and she does an absolutely fantastic job of portraying the inspirational and motivational civil rights pioneer. If you loved political biopics like Selma, Milk, or Rustin, you’ll love Shirley. The film also has a happy ending, making it perfect for anyone in need of an uplifting, feel-good story.
