Synopsis
With the Avengers no longer defending Earth, the Thunderbolts step in to take their place
In a world without the Avengers, who can humanity turn to? The Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine answers that question by assembling the ragtag group of mercenaries known as the Thunderbolts, led by Bucky Barns (aka the Winter Soldier). The group includes a variety of complex heroes looking for redemption including, John Walker (aka US Agent), Yelena Belova, Red Guardian, Taskmaster, and Ghost.

After relying on the Avengers for so long, who could have guessed that a ragtag band of dud "heroes" would be the ones to save Marvel on the big screen? In fact, you'll care for these D-listers even more than some of their A-list counterparts by the end, thanks in no small part to a script that contends with stronger, heavier themes than fans might be used to. The fights carry weight too as you feel each punch and kick connect without the genre's usual over reliance on CGI. The entire cast is marvellous, but Florence Pugh is the standout. Put her front and centre in everything moving forward.

The MCU is back with a bang, no asterisk needed!
Maybe it's because we've taken a sideways step away from the mainline MCU, or maybe it's just the fact that standards in the superhero world have dropped, but Thunderbolts feels like a breath of fresh air, and it's a really, really good time at the cinema. Florence Pugh carries the film with such warmth and light that it's impossible not to love Yelena, and the ensemble cast around her bring a great energy, too. My only complaint was that it ended too soon, which is never a bad issue to have. It's like Guardians of the Galaxy, but grounded, and it offers hope for the MCU moving forward.
