Mickey 17 (2025)

On paper, a sci-fi story with a comedic twist as Robert Pattinson clones get killed off one by one in space sounds like a blast. Throw in Bong Joon-ho as the director and you've surely got a winning formula. But, Mickey 17 doesn't quite live up to the hype, sadly. It's not a film that does anything particularly wrong, and it's perfectly engaging and entertaining. The problem is, Bong has set an unbelievably high standard for himself, and Mickey 17 just lacks that magic we've come to expect. Still, if you like Moon, Edge of Tomorrow, and Source Code, this'll work just fine for you.

While Mickey 17 might not measure up to Parasite, this is Bong Joon-ho's best English-language film by some distance with what might be my favourite Robert Pattininson performance(s) to date. In this extended remix of Bong's favourite themes, R-patz relishes the absurdity of Bong's deranged capitalist future with a cartoonish, offbeat spin that's mesmerising to watch. It's easy to see why Naomi Ackie's Nasha becomes obsessed with Mickey (and Mickey), just as it's easy to understand why you'll soon be obsessed with Nasha too. Bonus points for making the gross bug aliens so adorable.
